A Windmill Tour of Crete

Fly into Crete and the mountains dominate the view long before the coastline does: the White Mountains in the west, Psiloritis at the island's spine, the Dikti range in the east. Tucked into a high basin below Dikti sits the Lasithi Plateau, and for generations the first thing many visitors noticed there was not the fields of potatoes and apples but the sails above them. Thousands of small windmills, their canvas triangles catching the wind off the surrounding peaks, once turned in near-constant motion, pumping water up from wells to irrigate the plain below. That image, more than any other, is what people mean when they talk about the windmills of Crete, but it is only one layer of a longer story.

A Plateau Built Around Wind and Water

The Lasithi Plateau sits at roughly 800 metres above sea level, ringed by mountains that funnel wind across its floor for much of the year. Crete has no major rivers, and this basin in particular relies on groundwater rather than surface streams, so for generations farmers needed a way to lift water efficiently without fuel. The wind-pump windmill was the answer: a light metal or wooden tower topped with a rotor of canvas sails, engineered to turn into the wind automatically and drive a simple piston pump below. Rather than grinding grain, these machines existed purely to move water, and at the height of their use the plateau really was filled with them, spread field by field across the farmland.

The Older Craft: Stone Mills for Grain

Long before the plateau filled with pumping windmills, Crete already had a windmill tradition of its own, closer to what is found across the wider Aegean. Conical stone towers, similar in form to the well-known mills of the Cyclades, once stood on windswept ridges and hillsides near villages across the island, built to catch the strong seasonal winds that sweep the Aegean in summer. These grain mills used wooden lattice sails wrapped in cloth rather than the fan-style rotors of the plateau pumps, and their thick stone walls were built to withstand the same gusts that powered them. Many stand today as ruins or restored shells above villages in the Cretan countryside, quieter and far less photographed than their Lasithi cousins but part of the same underlying relationship between the island's terrain and its wind.

Grinding grain by wind rather than by hand or by animal power was a practical necessity on an island where good milling sites were limited and where seasonal winds could be relied upon more consistently than a small stream. Villages that could not support a water-driven mill often built a stone windmill instead, usually on the highest, most exposed spot nearby, since height and exposure meant a steadier supply of wind through the working day. The result is a scattering of these towers across upland Crete that has little to do with tourism and everything to do with where the wind actually blows hardest, a pattern that rewards travellers willing to leave the main routes.

Building for the Wind

Both kinds of Cretan windmill were, in their own way, engineering responses to the same problem: how to capture an unpredictable resource and turn it into steady, usable work. The stone grain mills relied on thick, rounded walls that could shrug off gale-force gusts for centuries, with a cap or rotor that could be turned to face the prevailing wind and sails that were reefed or fully unfurled depending on conditions, much like a ship's rigging. The pumping windmills of Lasithi took a lighter, more modern approach, using metal frames and a tail vane or automatic mechanism to keep the rotor facing into the wind without anyone needing to adjust it by hand, which let a single farmer manage many machines spread across scattered fields rather than tending one large mill full time.

Why the Sails Went Quiet

The wind-pump windmills of Lasithi were at their busiest through the middle of the twentieth century, when the plateau's agriculture depended on the water they lifted. As diesel and later electric pumps became cheap and reliable, farmers gradually turned away from wind power, since motorised pumps worked regardless of whether the wind was blowing and needed far less daily attention. Over the following decades the canvas sails came down field by field, and today only a small number are kept rigged and turning, mostly for visitors rather than irrigation. The metal towers that remain, sails or no sails, are still visible scattered across the plain, a landscape shaped by machines that are no longer doing the job they were built for.

Windmills as a Landmark

Even stripped of their sails, the windmills of the Lasithi Plateau became one of the recognisable images of Crete, printed on postcards and used to illustrate guidebooks long before mass tourism reached the island in earnest. A handful have been restored specifically so their sails can be seen turning again, giving visitors a sense of what the entire plain once looked like in motion. Local cafés and tavernas dotted around the plateau lean into this history, often naming themselves after the mills or displaying old pump mechanisms alongside newer irrigation equipment, treating the windmills less as relics to be forgotten and more as a working part of the plateau's identity.

Beyond Lasithi: Traces Across the Island

While Lasithi holds the most famous concentration, windmill remains turn up elsewhere across Crete, particularly in the drier, windier east around Sitia and in villages set on exposed hillsides further inland. These are almost always the older stone grain-mill type rather than the metal pump towers of the plateau, and many have been repurposed over the years, converted into small chapels, storage buildings, or private homes while keeping their distinctive round stone shape. Walking or driving through rural Crete, it is common to spot a solitary stone tower on a ridge long before realising it was once a working mill, a quiet reminder that wind power here was never confined to one plateau.

Visiting the Plateau Today

A drive up onto the Lasithi Plateau still climbs through a series of tight mountain passes before the land suddenly opens into a wide, flat basin ringed by peaks, and the change in scenery is abrupt enough that first-time visitors often stop simply to take it in. Villages around the rim of the plain, including Tzermiado and Psychro, make convenient bases for exploring on foot or by car, and the nearby Dikteon Cave, associated in Greek mythology with the birth of Zeus, gives many travellers a second reason to make the trip up from the coast. Combining the two, a short walk past working farmland dotted with old and occasionally restored windmill towers on the way to a cave steeped in myth, makes for one of the more layered day trips available on the island.

Wind, Terrain, and a Way of Life

What ties both traditions together is Crete's terrain itself: high plateaus and exposed ridgelines that channel wind reliably enough to make it worth harnessing, whether for grinding grain centuries ago or pumping water for irrigation more recently. The island's mountains, so often photographed for their scenery, also explain why windmills took hold here in the first place, and why two quite different types of mill, built generations apart and for different purposes, ended up sharing the same island.
