A Windmill Tour of Overijssel
Overijssel, a province in the eastern Netherlands bordering Germany, is threaded by three principal rivers, the IJssel, the Vecht and the Regge, whose management shaped a landscape where windmills were built to solve practical problems rather than to decorate a horizon. The province splits loosely into three zones: the flat farmland of Salland between the Vecht and the IJssel, the higher, sandier ridges of Twente to the east, and the low peat district of Noordwest-Overijssel, the so-called Kop van Overijssel, in the northwest. Each zone put mills to a different use, grinding grain, pumping water off reclaimed peatland, or both, and a number of them still stand today.
A Province Shaped by Water
Much of Overijssel sits low enough that water management has always been as important as agriculture itself. The IJssel, a branch of the Rhine, flows north through the province past Deventer, Zwolle and Kampen before reaching the IJsselmeer, while the Vecht winds through a quieter, more meandering valley to the west of Twente. Before modern pumping stations, the only practical way to keep farmland and villages dry in the lower-lying stretches was to lift water with wind power, one polder or one channel at a time. Windmills built for this purpose were engineered differently from the grain mills of the towns: simpler, often smaller, and positioned wherever a drainage board needed to move water from a ditch into a river. That functional logic, more than any single town or building, is what still ties Overijssel's surviving mills together as a coherent regional story rather than a scattered collection of monuments.
Kampen and the Rampart Mills
Kampen, one of the Hanseatic towns strung along the IJssel together with Zwolle and Deventer, built its wealth on medieval river trade and still shows it in a skyline of towers and gates. Like several other Dutch river towns, Kampen also converted its old town fortifications once they had lost their military purpose: the earthen ramparts, or bolwerken, that had once carried cannon were reused as mounds for windmills. Raising a mill onto an earthen bank lifted its sails clear of the surrounding rooftops and let it catch a steadier wind than it would have at ground level inside the crowded town, a design generally known as a beltmolen, or mound mill. Kampen's rampart mills, standing on grassy embankments close to the old town, are one of the more recognisable images of the province and a good illustration of how urban windmills solved a very local wind problem.
Draining the Peat in the Northwest
The Kop van Overijssel, in the northwest of the province, tells a different story. For centuries, communities here cut peat for fuel, and the excavation gradually turned dry ground into a patchwork of narrow lakes, ditches and reed beds, the landscape now protected as the De Wieden and De Weerribben nature areas around villages such as Giethoorn. Removing peat lowered the land further, and keeping the remaining fields and settlements from flooding meant constantly pumping water out and into larger channels such as the Zwarte Water. Small polder mills, and later wipmolens with a rotating cap set on a fixed brick or wooden base, did this work long before diesel and electric pumps took over in the twentieth century. A handful of these drainage mills survive in and around the peat district today, quieter and less visited than the town mills but just as central to how the region became habitable.
Anatomy of a Dutch Windmill
Dutch windmills are usually grouped by how they meet the ground and the wind rather than by what they produced. A grondzeiler, or ground-sailer, has sails that reach almost to the ground and needs open, unobstructed land, the type most common on Salland's flat farmland. A stellingmolen, or stage mill, is built tall with an external gallery, or stelling, raised above nearby buildings so the miller can reach the sails without them clearing rooftops, a common solution inside towns. A beltmolen, as at Kampen, achieves the same result by standing on an earthen mound instead of a gallery. Smaller drainage mills such as the wipmolen keep a fixed lower section while only the cap and sails rotate to face the wind. Overijssel, with its mix of open farmland, walled towns and peat marsh, happens to contain examples of most of these forms within a fairly compact area.
Salland's Farm Mills and Twente's Streams
Salland, the agricultural belt between the Vecht and the IJssel, is gentle, open country of arable fields and pasture, and its grain mills were built to serve individual farming villages rather than a large port or market town. Twente, further east and slightly higher, has a sandier, more undulating landscape shaped by streams such as the Regge and the Dinkel, and historically relied on watermills as well as windmills to grind grain, since flowing water was more reliably available there than in flatter Salland. Twente later became the centre of the Dutch textile industry, and the steam- and eventually electrically driven factory mills of that era are a separate story from the older wind- and water-powered grain mills, though the two overlap in the same towns and give the region an unusually layered milling history.
Millers, Volunteers and Living Heritage
Almost none of the mills still standing in Overijssel are commercially essential the way they once were, and nearly all of those in working order are kept turning by trained volunteer millers, known in Dutch as vrijwillige molenaars, who complete a recognised course before being allowed to operate the sails and grinding stones unsupervised. The national organisation De Hollandsche Molen supports this network of preservation and training across the country. Once a year, on National Mill Day, Nationale Molendag, held on a weekend in May, mills across the Netherlands, including a good number in Overijssel, open their doors together, sails turning and often grinding a batch of flour for visitors to buy. Outside that weekend, individual mills keep their own more limited opening hours, usually depending on the availability of a volunteer miller and, just as importantly, on there being enough wind that day.
Visiting the Mills of Overijssel
A mill-focused visit to Overijssel works well alongside the province's Hanseatic towns: Kampen and its rampart mills, Zwolle with its old fortified centre, and Deventer on the IJssel all reward an afternoon of walking regardless of whether a mill happens to be open. In the northwest, a boat or canoe through the canals around Giethoorn is the easiest way to see the peat district's drainage mills in their proper watery setting. Because turning sails depend on wind and on a volunteer miller's schedule, it is worth checking a mill's own opening times before planning a special trip around it, rather than assuming it will be running on any given day.
