Upminster Windmill: The Smock Mill That Outlasted London's Sprawl
On St Mary's Lane in Upminster, at the far eastern edge of Greater London, a tall weatherboarded tower rises above the rooftops of an otherwise ordinary suburban street. This is Upminster Windmill, a smock mill built in the early years of the nineteenth century, when the surrounding land was still open Essex farmland. For more than a century its sails turned to grind corn for local farms; then the city arrived, the milling stopped, and the building began a second life as one of the capital's most cherished industrial monuments. Its survival, through decay, redevelopment pressure and the relentless spread of suburbia, is one of the more remarkable stories in English mill heritage.
A farmer's investment in Georgian Essex
The mill owes its existence to James Noakes, a local farmer who had it built in the opening years of the 1800s. The timing was shrewd. Britain was at war with Napoleonic France, grain prices were high, and a well-placed corn mill was a sound commercial proposition. Upminster at that time was a quiet agricultural parish in south Essex, surrounded by arable fields whose harvests needed grinding, and London, a day's cart ride away, offered a hungry market for flour and meal.
Noakes chose to build not a modest post mill of the kind that had served English villages for centuries, but a large smock mill: a far more ambitious and expensive machine. It was a statement of confidence in the future of local agriculture, and for several generations that confidence was justified. The mill remained in the Noakes family before later changing hands, and it continued as a working commercial business at the heart of the parish economy throughout the nineteenth century.
Anatomy of a smock mill
A smock mill takes its name from its silhouette: the tapering, many-sided wooden tower was thought to resemble the linen smock worn by farm labourers of the period. At Upminster the tower has eight sides, built as a heavy timber frame clad in painted weatherboards and set on a brick base. The great advantage of the design over the older post mill is that only the cap at the very top needs to turn to face the wind, rather than the whole body of the mill. That cap carries the sails and is turned automatically by a fantail, a small wind wheel mounted at the rear which senses any change in wind direction and gently winds the cap back into position.
The mill carries four sails of the patent type, fitted with hinged shutters that work rather like a Venetian blind. Instead of stopping the mill to spread or reef canvas, the miller could adjust all the shutters at once, letting the sails spill wind in a gust and catch it again in a lull. Inside, the power of the sails passes down a massive upright shaft and through a series of wooden and iron gears to drive pairs of millstones, along with sack hoists and other machinery arranged over several floors.
Steam, millers and the Abraham name
Wind is free but unreliable, and like many nineteenth-century mills Upminster hedged its bets. A steam engine was installed on the site to supplement the sails, allowing grinding to continue in calm weather and helping the business keep pace with demand. Milling here was never a picturesque hobby; it was a hard-nosed trade run by families who lived and worked on the premises, buying grain, dressing stones and hauling flour in all seasons.
The family most closely associated with the mill is the Abrahams, who ran it during the later Victorian decades and beyond. So thoroughly did they become identified with the business that local people simply called it Abraham's Mill, a name still remembered in Upminster today. Under their management the mill remained genuinely commercial well into the twentieth century, long after most of England's windmills had fallen idle, a testament both to the quality of the machinery and to the skill of the millers who worked it.
The end of wind power and a narrow escape
The forces that eventually stopped the sails were the same ones that killed village milling across the country. Vast steam-driven and later electric roller mills at the ports could produce whiter flour far more cheaply from imported grain, and the railways distributed it everywhere. At the same time, Upminster itself was changing beyond recognition: the arrival of the railway and the housing boom between the wars transformed the parish from Essex farmland into a London commuter suburb, and the fields the mill had served disappeared under streets of new houses.
Commercial milling at Upminster came to an end in the 1930s, and the redundant tower might easily have been pulled down to free the land for building. Instead, in 1937 Essex County Council stepped in and purchased the mill in order to preserve it, an early and farsighted act of industrial conservation. Responsibility later passed to local authorities, and with the reorganisation of London's boundaries the mill found itself inside the new London Borough of Havering, whose name it carries on heritage registers today.
Rebuilt from the ground up
Preservation, however, is never a single act; a wooden building exposed to English weather needs constant care. Through the second half of the twentieth century the mill was repaired in phases, opened occasionally to visitors, and watched over by local enthusiasts. In time these supporters organised themselves as the Friends of Upminster Windmill, a volunteer group dedicated to conserving the structure and its machinery and to opening it regularly to the public.
The most dramatic chapter came in recent years, when a major restoration backed by National Lottery heritage funding tackled the mill's problems at their root. The cap was lifted off and the timber smock tower painstakingly dismantled, repaired and rebuilt by specialist millwrights, combining traditional techniques with modern engineering. Original machinery was conserved rather than replaced wherever possible, so that the mill standing today is not a replica but the genuine article, returned to structural health. A visitor centre was created alongside, and archaeological work on the site has shed light on the lost buildings, including the old steam mill, that once clustered around the tower.
Visiting the mill today
Upminster Windmill is a listed building of the highest significance, protected at Grade II*, a designation reserved for particularly important structures. It is also astonishingly complete: visitors who climb through its floors can follow the whole journey of the grain, from the sack hoist to the millstones and down to the meal bins, surrounded by original timberwork and gearing. Few windmills anywhere in Britain preserve so much of their working equipment in place.
The mill is opened to the public by its volunteers on advertised open days, with guided tours that bring the machinery and the milling families vividly to life. Getting there is easy: Upminster lies at the eastern end of the District line, and the mill stands only a short walk from the station, a rare case of a historic windmill that can comfortably be reached by Underground.
