A Windmill Tour of Drenthe: The Corn Mills of the Netherlands' Sandy Northeast

Drenthe, the Netherlands' northeastern province of sandy heath and glacial ridges, has long depended on wind to turn grain into flour. Unlike the polder mills of Holland, built to pump water off low-lying land, Drenthe's windmills were built for a different purpose: corn mills, or korenmolens, standing at the edge of villages to serve farmers who worked some of the country's poorest, sandiest soils. Rye and buckwheat, the staple crops of a land too thin for much else, were milled here for generations, and a surprising number of these mills still turn today.

A landscape built on sand and wind

Drenthe sits on a plateau of glacial till, pushed south during the ice ages and later shaped by wind and water into the low sandy ridge known as the Hondsrug. The soil is thin, acidic, and drains quickly, which made it unsuitable for the kind of intensive arable farming found in the clay regions further west. For centuries, Drenthe's farmers instead cultivated rye on small enclosed fields, fertilized with sod and manure in a system known locally as the potstal method, and left large stretches of heath and forest untouched. This same open, treeless terrain that frustrated farmers was ideal for windmills: with few obstructions to break the wind, a mill built almost anywhere on the plateau could catch a steady breeze, which is part of why corn mills became such a common sight across the province's villages.

The same heathland that limited farming also gave Drenthe its other famous landmarks, the hunebedden, megalithic tombs raised by Neolithic communities long before any mill turned here. That deep history of working a difficult, sandy landscape runs in a straight line to the corn mills of later centuries: both are responses to the same thin soil and open sky, one built from stone to endure, the other built from wood and canvas to keep a farming community fed through the winter.

From post mills to ground-sailers

The mills that served Drenthe's farming communities came in several traditional Dutch forms. The oldest type, the standerdmolen or post mill, has its entire wooden body pivoting on a single upright post so the sails can be turned into the wind; a handful of these survive in the region as some of the oldest working mills in the country. More common in Drenthe are grondzeilers, or ground-sailers, corn mills whose sails reach almost to the ground, built low because the flat, open landscape offered no obstacles to catch the wind higher up. Where extra height was needed, millers raised their mill on an earthen mound or belt, creating a beltmolen, which lifted the sails clear of nearby buildings or trees without the expense of a taller brick tower. Each design reflects the same practical logic: catch the wind efficiently, and do it as cheaply as the local terrain allows.

Grinding rye and buckwheat

Inside, a corn mill's job was straightforward but demanding. Sails turned a horizontal wind shaft connected through wooden gearing to a pair of heavy millstones, the runner stone rotating above a fixed bedstone, with grain trickling between them from a hopper. The miller controlled the gap between the stones by hand, judging the right setting from the sound and feel of the grinding rather than any gauge, since too tight a gap could scorch the flour and too loose a gap would leave it coarse. Rye, ground into a dark, dense flour, went into the region's traditional rye bread, while buckwheat, well suited to poor sandy soil, was often ground into groats used in porridges and pancakes. Millers also processed oats and other grains as the season and local demand required, and a mill often served several villages, with farmers queuing to have their harvest turned into flour before winter set in. The miller himself held a distinct position in village life, part tradesman and part weather forecaster, since a mill only earned its keep when someone was on hand to read the sky, set the sails, and adjust the canvas as the wind rose or fell through the day. A miller's toll, typically a share of the flour or grain itself rather than a cash payment, was for a long time the standard way the trade was paid, tying the mill's fortunes directly to the harvest of the surrounding farms.

Villages that kept their mills

Across Drenthe, a number of villages have kept their traditional corn mills standing at their edges, largely thanks to preservation efforts that gathered pace through the twentieth century as milling by wind gave way to steam, diesel, and electric power. In villages from the northern sandy districts down toward Dwingeloo and Ruinen further south, old corn mills remain part of the local streetscape, their thatched or shingled caps and wooden sails rising above brick and timber-framed houses. Some stand within open-air heritage settings that preserve a wider picture of rural Drenthe life alongside the mill itself, including farmhouses, barns, and workshops from the same era. Even where a mill no longer grinds commercially, it typically remains the tallest and most recognisable structure in its village, a landmark that outlasted the agricultural economy that built it. Walking through one of these villages today, it is easy to picture the mill as it once was: sails turning above rooftops, carts of grain waiting in the yard, and a miller judging the wind before deciding whether to work through the afternoon or wait for a stronger gust.

The volunteer miller tradition

Keeping a wooden windmill turning is skilled, physical work, and the Netherlands has built a formal system to pass that skill on. The Gilde van Vrijwillige Molenaars, the guild of volunteer millers, trains and certifies millers through a multi-year apprenticeship covering everything from reading wind and weather to adjusting millstones and handling the sails safely in a gale. Many of Drenthe's corn mills are now run entirely by these trained volunteers, who open their mills on weekends and on National Mill Day, held each May, when hundreds of Dutch windmills and watermills raise their sails for public visits. Without this volunteer network, many rural mills that lost their commercial purpose decades ago would likely have fallen silent or been demolished rather than preserved as working machines.

Preservation in the twenty-first century

Mill preservation in the Netherlands is supported by a mix of heritage organisations, provincial funding, and local foundations, with De Hollandsche Molen among the best known national bodies advocating for windmill and watermill conservation. Detailed records of individual mills, including their type, history, and current condition, are kept in national mill databases used by historians, restorers, and enthusiasts alike. Restoration work on a wooden mill is a specialised and costly undertaking, since sails, caps, and gearing all need periodic replacement or repair by craftsmen trained in traditional joinery, and thatched caps must be rethatched on a regular cycle. Drenthe's mills, modest compared to the grand polder mills of Holland, nonetheless represent an important part of this preservation effort: unglamorous working machines that once fed a whole rural province and now stand as some of its most enduring landmarks.
