Stembridge Tower Mill: England's Last Thatched Windmill
On a ridge above the Somerset Levels, in the small village of High Ham, stands a windmill unlike any other in the country. Stembridge Tower Mill is the last windmill in England to retain a thatched cap, the rotating roof that once allowed the sails to be turned into the wind. Built in the early nineteenth century from local blue lias stone and worked until the early twentieth, it survives today in the care of the National Trust as a singular monument to a milling tradition that has otherwise vanished from the English landscape.
A survivor on the Somerset ridge
High Ham sits on high ground overlooking the Somerset Levels, the low-lying wetland plain that spreads across much of central Somerset. That elevated position is exactly why a windmill was built here. The Levels themselves are famously flat and waterlogged, historically better suited to water management, willow growing and grazing than to catching the wind, but the ridges that rise above them offered millers the steady breezes they needed. Stembridge Tower Mill was raised in 1822, at a time when wind and water still powered almost all of England's grain milling. Somerset once had many working windmills scattered across its hilltops, alongside a far greater number of watermills along its rivers and streams. One by one they fell silent as steam power, and later roller milling in large industrial mills, made small village mills uneconomic. Stembridge outlasted almost all of its neighbours, and by surviving with its thatched cap intact it became something no other place in England can claim: the last of its kind.
Blue lias stone and Somerset craft
The tower of the mill is built from blue lias, the grey-blue limestone that underlies much of this part of Somerset and appears in churches, farmhouses and field walls across the county. Using the stone that lay closest to hand was simply practical for the builders of 1822, but it also ties the mill visually to its surroundings in a way that brick or timber never could. The tower tapers as it rises, a standard feature of English tower mills that gives the structure stability against the enormous forces transmitted by the sails in a strong wind. A tower mill differs fundamentally from the older post mill design, in which the entire wooden body of the mill rotated around a central post. In a tower mill only the cap at the very top turns, carrying the sails and the windshaft with it, while the heavy stone tower and all the machinery inside remain fixed. This arrangement allowed tower mills to be built taller and more durably, and it is the reason so many of them, Stembridge included, still stand two centuries later.
The thatched cap that makes it unique
What sets Stembridge apart from every other surviving windmill in England is the material of its cap. Mill caps came in many regional shapes, from boat-shaped caps in East Anglia to domed and conical forms elsewhere, and they were most commonly clad in timber boarding or metal sheeting. At Stembridge the cap is thatched, covered in the same craft material used for cottage roofs across the West Country. Thatch was once a perfectly ordinary roofing choice in rural Somerset, where the raw material was close at hand and thatchers were part of every district's workforce. On a windmill, however, a thatched cap is a demanding thing to maintain. It must keep the weather out of the machinery below while sitting on a structure that was designed to rotate, and it needs periodic renewal by skilled hands, as all thatch does. That other thatched mill caps in England gradually disappeared, replaced during repairs or lost when mills were demolished, makes the survival at Stembridge remarkable. Today the cap is not merely a roof but the defining feature of the building and the reason the mill is nationally celebrated.
Working life: wind, stones and flour
For most of the nineteenth century Stembridge Tower Mill did the everyday work of a village corn mill. Local farmers brought their grain to be ground, and the mill returned meal and flour for households and animal feed for farms. Inside the tower, the power of the sails was carried down through the windshaft and a great vertical shaft to drive the millstones, between which the grain was ground. The miller's skill lay in constant adjustment: setting the gap between the stones, regulating the flow of grain, and above all managing the sails and the cap so that the mill faced the wind squarely and ran at a safe, productive speed. Too little wind and the stones would grind poorly; too much, and an unattended mill could run dangerously fast. In its later working years the mill, like many others of its era, no longer relied on wind alone, and milling at Stembridge continued until around 1910 before finally coming to an end. By then the age of the village windmill was effectively over across England, undercut by cheap imported grain and vast steam-driven roller mills at the ports.
Decline, rescue and the National Trust
After milling stopped, Stembridge faced the fate that met thousands of redundant windmills in the twentieth century: redundancy, decay and the constant risk of demolition. Many English mills were pulled down for materials, truncated into houses, or simply left to collapse. Stembridge was fortunate. It remained standing, its distinctive cap survived, and in 1969 the mill was given to the National Trust, the charity that cares for historic places across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Under the Trust's stewardship the mill has been conserved as a historic structure rather than reinvented as something else, and the thatched cap has been renewed by craftsmen so that the building keeps the feature that makes it unique. Conservation of a windmill is never a single act but a continuing commitment: timber, stone, machinery and thatch all age at their own pace, and each generation of caretakers must decide how to repair without erasing the authentic fabric of the past.
Why Stembridge matters beyond Somerset
It is tempting to file Stembridge Tower Mill away as a local curiosity, but its significance is genuinely national. Windmills were once as characteristic of the English countryside as church towers, numbering in the thousands at their peak. What survives today is a scattered remnant, and every surviving mill preserves particular details of regional building practice. Stembridge preserves one that exists nowhere else: the combination of a stone tower mill with a thatched cap, executed in Somerset materials by Somerset hands. For historians of technology it documents how vernacular building crafts and milling engineering met in one structure. For anyone interested in landscape, it explains at a glance why mills stood where they did, perched on ridges above the wet Levels.
