Sibsey Trader Mill: The Six-Sailed Giant of the Lincolnshire Fens

Drive north out of Boston on the road towards Skegness and, just past the village of Sibsey, a black brick tower rises abruptly from the flat Lincolnshire Fens. What stops people in their tracks is not the tower itself but what sits on top of it: six sails, arranged like the spokes of a great wheel, where almost every other English windmill carries four. This is Sibsey Trader Mill, built in 1877, one of the very few six-sailed windmills left standing in England — and, remarkably, one that has been restored to working order and still grinds flour by the power of the wind.

Why six sails at all?

Four sails became the standard for European windmills for a simple reason: two crossed stocks passing through the head of the windshaft give four arms with a minimum of joinery. Anything more requires a cast-iron cross, a hub into which each sail is bolted individually. Once iron founding matured in the nineteenth century, ambitious millwrights realised they could fit five, six or even eight sails to a single shaft. More sails meant more canvas area catching the wind, smoother running, and the ability to work usefully in lighter breezes — a real advantage in a competitive trade. Lincolnshire became the heartland of this multi-sailed tradition. The county once had a whole family of five-, six- and eight-sailed mills, of which only a handful survive today. Sibsey Trader is one of the finest, and its six-sailed configuration is precisely what makes it nationally significant. A six-sailed mill also has a curious practical property: if one sail is damaged, the opposite sail can be removed and the mill can carry on working with four, something a four-sailed mill can never do with two.

Built late, built well: the Saundersons of Louth

Sibsey Trader Mill was built in 1877 by the firm of Saunderson, millwrights of Louth, a market town on the eastern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. By that date the writing was already on the wall for wind power: steam mills were spreading fast, and within a few decades huge roller mills at the ports would undercut country millers entirely. That context makes the Trader Mill fascinating. It was a thoroughly modern industrial machine for its day — brick-built, iron-geared, fitted with the latest labour-saving refinements — erected at almost the last moment such an investment could still make commercial sense. The Saundersons were among the most respected millwrights in a county full of them, and their work here shows it: the proportions of the tapering tower, the neat detailing of the cap, and the confident engineering of the six-sail cross all speak of a firm at the top of its craft. The mill replaced an earlier post mill that had stood on the site, a common pattern in the nineteenth century as prosperous millers traded up from timber post mills to taller, more powerful brick towers.

The Lincolnshire look: tarred brick and an ogee cap

Sibsey Trader is a textbook example of the classic Lincolnshire mill style. The tower is built of brick and coated in black tar, a practical waterproofing measure that gives these mills their distinctive dark silhouette against the Fenland sky. On top sits a white-painted cap in the graceful onion-shaped profile known as an ogee, ending in a ball finial — a signature of Lincolnshire millwrighting that makes the county's mills instantly recognisable. Behind the cap turns a fantail, a small secondary wind wheel mounted at right angles to the sails. Whenever the wind shifts, the fantail catches it and slowly winds the whole cap around until the sails face squarely into the breeze again, entirely automatically. The sails themselves are of the shuttered type, fitted with rows of hinged shutters rather than cloth spread by hand. Their opening and closing can be adjusted without stopping the mill, letting the miller regulate power in gusty weather. Every one of these features — tar, ogee, fantail, shuttered sails — represents a solution refined over generations, and at Sibsey they survive together as a complete, coherent system.

Inside the tower: how the mill works

Step inside and the logic of a tower mill unfolds vertically. Grain arrives at the bottom and is hoisted by a sack hoist — itself wind-driven — to the top of the mill, from where gravity does the rest of the transport for free. High in the cap, the sails turn the windshaft, which carries a great brake wheel. This meshes with the wallower, the first gear on the upright shaft that runs down the centre of the tower like a spine. Further down, the upright shaft turns the great spur wheel, from which smaller stone nuts take the drive off to the millstones. The stones work in pairs: a fixed bedstone below and a rotating runner stone above, their faces dressed with a pattern of grooves that shear the grain and sweep the meal outwards to the edge, where it falls through a chute to the floor below to be sifted and bagged. The miller's real skill lay in the adjustments — setting the gap between the stones to a hair's breadth, matching the feed of grain to the strength of the wind, listening constantly to the sound of the machinery. A well-run mill, the old millers said, could be judged by ear from the yard.

Milling on the edge of the Fens

Sibsey sits on the northern margin of the Fens, the vast low-lying plain of eastern England that was drained over centuries into some of the most productive farmland in Britain. The geography explains the mill perfectly. The land is table-flat, so the wind sweeps across it with nothing to break its force — ideal conditions for a tall tower mill. And the drained Fens grew grain in enormous quantities, particularly wheat and oats, which needed grinding for the farms, bakeries and households of the district. The nearby port and market town of Boston, with its own famous landmark tower, the Boston Stump, was the commercial hub of this corn country. A mill on the main road just outside Boston was superbly placed to serve passing trade as well as its own parish — and the name Trader Mill is usually explained exactly this way, as a mill that ground for commerce rather than merely for a single estate or village. In the nineteenth century windmills like this one were the essential processing plants of the rural economy, as ordinary and as vital as the grain elevator or the co-op dairy would later become elsewhere.

Decline, rescue and a working retirement

The twentieth century was brutal to windmills. Roller milling concentrated flour production in vast steam- and later electricity-driven plants at the ports, and one by one the country mills fell silent, lost their sails, and crumbled or were converted. Sibsey Trader worked on longer than most, latterly grinding animal feed, before commercial wind milling finally ceased in the mid-twentieth century. What saved it was a combination of its rarity and timely intervention: as one of the last six-sailed mills in the country it was recognised as a monument of national importance, protected by listing, and taken into the care of the State — it is today looked after by English Heritage. Restoration returned the mill to working order, and that word working matters. Sibsey Trader is not a static museum piece: on milling days the brake is eased off, six sails gather the Fenland wind, and stoneground flour once again pours from the chutes, sold to visitors much as it was to Victorian farmers. A tearoom and the surviving mill buildings complete a site where the whole story of a country mill can still be read in one place.
