Heage Windmill: The Six-Sailed Stone Tower of Derbyshire
On a windy ridge above the village of Heage in Derbyshire stands a squat stone tower that does something almost no other windmill in England can do: it works, and it does so with six sails. Most English tower mills carried four sails, a handful carried five or eight, and the six-sailed survivors can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Heage Windmill is the only stone tower mill in England still grinding grain with six sails, and that single fact has turned a modest village corn mill into a landmark of national importance. Visitors who climb the lane out of Heage today find the mill doing exactly what it was built to do more than two centuries ago: catching the wind and turning it into flour.
A tower built for the wind
Heage Windmill belongs to the classic English tower mill tradition. Instead of the earlier post mill, in which the entire wooden body rotated around a central post, a tower mill has a fixed masonry tower with only the cap at the top turning to face the wind. At Heage the tower was raised from local sandstone, the same warm, honey-grey gritstone that shapes so many farmhouses and field walls in this part of Derbyshire. The result is a building that looks as if it grew out of the hillside rather than being placed upon it.
The site was chosen with care. Heage sits between Belper and Ripley in the Amber Valley, on high ground that catches the winds funnelling across the southern edge of the Pennines. A corn mill lives or dies by its exposure, and the ridge above the village offered the miller a reliable supply of moving air along with easy access for the farmers who carted their grain up the hill. The tower is not tall by the standards of the great East Anglian mills, but on its elevated site it never needed to be.
Georgian origins
The mill dates from the closing years of the eighteenth century, with 1797 the year traditionally associated with its construction. This was the height of the great age of English wind milling, when a growing population and expanding local economies made a village corn mill a sound investment. Derbyshire was never windmill country in the way that Lincolnshire or Norfolk were; the county's fast-flowing rivers meant that watermills did most of the grinding. That makes Heage doubly unusual: a rare survivor of an already rare local breed.
For roughly its first hundred years the mill worked as an ordinary four-sailed tower mill, grinding wheat and other grain for the surrounding farms and villages. Millers came and went, the machinery was repaired and renewed as parts wore out, and the mill settled into the steady rhythm of agricultural life in the Amber Valley. Nothing about its early history suggested that it would one day become famous.
The storm of 1894 and the six sails
The event that transformed Heage Windmill happened suddenly and violently. In 1894 a great storm tore across Derbyshire and wrecked the top of the mill, carrying away the cap and sails. For many mills of the period such damage would have been a death sentence, since wind power was already losing ground to steam and the economics of repair rarely made sense. At Heage, however, the owners chose to rebuild, and they did so ambitiously.
The mill was re-equipped with a new cap and, crucially, with six sails rather than the original four. Multi-sailed mills were a speciality of the East Midlands millwrighting tradition; the famous firms of Lincolnshire built five-, six- and even eight-sailed mills, prized because more sails delivered more power and smoother running in light winds. When Heage was rebuilt after the storm, it joined this select company. The six-sail configuration installed in the 1890s is the one the mill carries today, and it is the reason the silhouette on the ridge is instantly recognisable: six shuttered sails radiating from the cap like the spokes of a wheel.
How the machinery works
Everything above the stonework at Heage is a lesson in traditional mill engineering. The cap that crowns the tower can rotate on a curb, and it is steered automatically by a fantail, the small secondary wind wheel mounted at the rear. When the wind shifts, it strikes the fantail from the side, the fantail spins, and through gearing it slowly winds the whole cap around until the sails once again face squarely into the wind. The miller never has to push the cap around by hand.
The six sails are of the shuttered type, fitted with rows of hinged shutters rather than cloth spread over a lattice. The shutters can open and close like a venetian blind, spilling wind in gusts and holding it in steady breezes, which lets the mill regulate its own speed. Inside, the rotation of the sails turns the windshaft, and a great brake wheel transfers the power down through the vertical shaft to the stone floor, where pairs of millstones grind the grain. The bottom stone lies still while the upper runner stone turns above it, and the gap between them, finer than a sheet of paper at the edge, determines the texture of the flour.
Decline, dereliction and listing
Like almost every windmill in Britain, Heage could not survive the twentieth century as a business. Roller mills in the towns produced cheaper, whiter flour at industrial scale, and country corn mills lost their customers one by one. Heage ground on longer than many, working until around the end of the First World War, but by the interwar years the sails were still and the building began the long slide into dereliction that claimed so many of its contemporaries.
What saved the tower was its sheer solidity and, eventually, official recognition of its rarity. The gritstone shell endured decades of neglect that would have destroyed a timber smock mill. The mill was given listed building status at Grade II*, a designation reserved for particularly important structures, and ownership passed into public hands under Derbyshire County Council. Repairs in the later twentieth century kept the structure standing, but a windmill without turning sails is only half alive, and for years Heage remained a picturesque shell rather than a working mill.
The volunteer restoration
The full rebirth of Heage Windmill was the work of local people. A dedicated group of enthusiasts, organised around the Heage Windmill Society, campaigned and fundraised through the 1990s for a complete working restoration. Millwrights repaired the cap, the fantail, the machinery and the six shuttered sails, and in 2002 the mill was formally reopened and began grinding grain by wind power once more, after an idle spell of some eight decades.
Since then the mill has been run almost entirely by volunteers: trained millers who operate the machinery, guides who lead visitors up the ladders from floor to floor, and helpers who bag flour, staff the shop and keep the site in order. Wind-milling is a craft with real risks and real skill, and the survival of that knowledge at Heage is as much a part of the restoration as the timber and ironwork. The stoneground wholemeal flour produced here is sold to visitors, closing a circle that stretches back to the 1790s: grain in, flour out, powered by nothing but the weather.
Why Heage matters
It is worth pausing on what makes this mill significant beyond its postcard charm. England once had thousands of working windmills; today only a small number can still grind by wind, and each surviving configuration tells part of the story of a vanished industry. Heage preserves the East Midlands multi-sail tradition in stone, on its original site, with machinery that does real work rather than turning for show. It demonstrates the fantail and the shuttered sail, two of the great self-regulating inventions of eighteenth-century mill engineering, in everyday use. And it shows how heritage survives in practice: through a storm rebuild in the 1890s, a county council's stewardship, and above all the stubborn devotion of volunteers who refused to let the sails stand still.
